In Term 3, the Flute, Clarinet and Saxophone students had the incredible opportunity to work with internationally renowned performer and award-winning clarinettist, Dr Ashley Smith, Associate Professor and Chair of Woodwind at The University of Western Australia.
Dr Smith challenged our students to explore the weird and whacky sounds their instruments can make, including harmonics, spectral sweeps and even singing while playing! Students also explored breathing techniques to help produce a fuller, more focused sound.
The workshop was a fantastic opportunity for our young musicians to develop their skills, gain insights from a leading professional and prepare for their upcoming festival performances.
We are incredibly grateful to Dr Smith for sharing his time and expertise with our talented musicians. And to our parents, we apologise in advance for the odd sounds you may hear at home!
As Dr Smith said, โIf you can master the extremes, all of a sudden everything else becomes easier.โ
