Aveley Secondary College is a technology focussed school; students are expected to have an iPad to support their learning.
Aveley Secondary College has partnered with Winthrop Australia to offer specially discounted Apple products for student in the One to One device program. The device can be sourced from any supplier.
The Benefits of BYOD
Personalised centred learning – The schooling generation of today is like no other. The personal devices of these native tech head students have become a significant part of their everyday life.
Allowing students to have access to their personal devices for educational purposes enhances motivation and engagement within a classroom setting. As a result, involving these devices as an integral part of a student’s learning life will encourage active learning and education as a central part of their everyday life.
Research shows students prefer the mobility, smaller weight and adaptability of tablet devices. Therefore the recommended device is the iPad 7th Generation 128 GB A10 chip 10.2 inch Retina Display. We strongly advise that the ‘STM’ case (protective polycarbonate, rubberised and water resistant) and AppleCare be purchased.
The iPad starts at $603. There is a bundle including a STM Dux Plus Duo Case (includes pencil storage) and AppleCare for $727. Additional accessories such as an Apple Pencil or Logitech Crayon are available for purchase.
With the recent changes to the Student Mobile Phone Policy (effective January 2020), we are updating our BYOD program to include mandated mobile device management via ZuluDesk. All BYOD iPads at Aveley are required to be enrolled in ZuluDesk in order to access the College Wi-Fi Network. iPads not enrolled in ZuluDesk will not have internet access during the school day. This system installs a profile on the iPad that allows the College to download paid and free Apps and ‘push’ them onto your child’s iPad for use in school and at home. From time to time new Apps will appear on their iPad as we obtain more applications for classroom use. We can also push updates to iPads during the school day to ensure that iPads are running the required iOS and version of each application installed by the College.
ZuluDesk allows the College to ‘whitelist’ or approve applications for use during the school day to ensure that personal applications are not distracting students from learning during class time. This whitelist will come into effect when the child is on site and connected to the internet. Once they leave the school grounds, personal applications are again visible on the iPad. This whitelist will be updated regularly to ensure students have access to all required applications for their classes. ZuluDesk also allows the College to reset student iPads when they have become locked or have forgotten their password – previously this required a visit to the Apple Store or the iPad to be wiped and reimaged.
Parents will also be able to access the ZuluDesk Parent Portal. The Portal will allow you to restrict applications on your child’s iPad for a set period of time, allowing your child to complete study and homework without distractions. You will also be able to restrict websites and check if your child is online. With ZuluDesk Parent it is simple to restrict the tablet to a specific app for a set period of time. During this restriction it is not possible to receive text messages or push notifications. No distractions during study time! ZuluDesk Parent is used in a web browser, therefore it can be used on all web-enabled devices: a computer, tablet or smartphone. Once iPads are enrolled in ZuluDesk, our ICT Technician will set up and send login details for parents to access the portal.
