As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback via the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Aveley Secondary College. The link to the survey was sent out today and last week to your email. If you can’t find it please ask our administration and we will resend it. The survey closes on Wednesday.
Try-A-Trade
A number of our Year 10 students recently completed a carpentry and brickwork skills Try-a-Trade course hosted by the College and run through Construction Training Fund (CTF). The students learned a range of skills and undertook a carpentry and brickwork project.
We look forward to working with CTF and Skill Hire as we move forward with our Senior School Scholarship Program. It is wonderful to see students learning vocational skills and getting ready for their future pathways.
New Staff: Caitlin Woodford
Welcoming Caitlin Woodford to our English team this term. Caitlin is an outstanding teacher and a graduate of the prestigious Teach for Australia program at her previous school. We are very pleased to have her join us!
Hi, my name is Caitlin Woodford and this term I have had the pleasure of joining the English team at Aveley. Before joining Aveley I taught English and Visual Art at Joseph Banks Secondary College whilst completing a Master of Education and the Teach for Australia Leadership Development Program. I am passionate about encouraging each learner’s personal growth and aim to nurture every student in the realisation of their potential. I look forward to getting to know the fantastic community of staff, students, parents, and carers at Aveley and if you see me around, please don’t hesitate to say hi.
ANZAC Ceremony
Our ANZAC assembly was held on Friday 23rd April. With special guests including Jessica Shaw MLA, Haakon McKay – Secretary of RSLWA Ellenbrook Sub Branch, City of Swan Councilors Kate McCullough and Patty Jones, Wing Commander Matthew Harvey(who presented our Anzac Address), Michelle Anderson and Michelle Del Nero from our College board. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to reflect on the ANZAC spirit and see how our agreements of resilience, perseverance, appreciation, responsibility and respect relate to this occasion. We pay our respects.
Stage 2 Opening Ceremony
Minister for Education Sue Ellery and Jessica Shaw MLA attended the College yesterday, along with a large number of special guests to open our second stage building program. These buildings are a great addition to the College and include a specialised Performing Arts Theatre, Dance Studio, Visual Arts Studio, Media Labs, Music specialist facilities as well as a general learning block. Our students did a great job hosting the event.
Term 2 Academies
Our Term 2 Academies are now open for enrolment via Qkr! The Academies will commence Week 2 (or Week 3 if it is on a Monday due to the Anzac Day Public Holiday) and conclude Week 9. We have a range of Academies this term including Taiko drumming, homework club, a running club, chess club, futsal, career skills and ATAR extension chemistry.
Academies are run by staff on a voluntary basis and we are proud and grateful of the commitment our staff make to our students’ wellbeing and extra curricula opportunities.
Roadworks
Due to building works nearby the school there is a partial road closure on Maffina Parade in place just for this week. There is a detour via Bordeaux Lane and Devitt Way to assist parents in collecting students after school.
Catering and Cafe Culture
Our fantastic Home Economics staff have been working with our Year 10 students in their Catering & Café Culture course to design their own café and brunch menu. Students were able to produce and plate their creations. We had a variety of different dishes that catered to a range of different dietary requirements and showed the diverse talents of the class. The Technologies department think they are worthy to be featured in any café in Perth!
da Vinci Decathlon
Our Year 7 Academic Extension Program students recently competed in UWA’s da Vinci Decathlon, an academic competition designed to challenge students across a range of fields. Each school has a team of eight students that face challenges in: English, engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy.
The Aveley SC team did an amazing job and placed first in the cartography category!
Well done to the students and staff involved, congratulations on a fabulous effort.
