New staff: Melissa Watson
Introducing Melissa Watson who will be joining our English and HASS departments in 2021.
Hello everyone, my name is Melissa Watson and I will be joining the Aveley Secondary College HASS and English departments in 2021.
This year I completed a combined Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts at Murdoch University, majoring in History and minoring in English. Throughout my undergraduate degree, I worked as an educator for an outside school hours care which provided me the opportunity to support primary aged children as they made new discoveries and grew as individuals. Now as a high school teacher, I hope to continue to do this with the young people who enter my classroom.
I was inspired to become a teacher by my Year 12 Human Biology teacher who shared her never ending passion for her subject and her deep care and commitment to her students every day. I hope to bring these qualities to my classroom, and create a space where every student feels a sense of belonging and can experience success as they become life long learners and work towards achieving their dreams!
I am incredibly excited to begin my teaching journey and cannot wait to meet all the ASC students and families next year!

New staff: Shane Sharma
Introducing Shane Sharma who is joining our Physical Education and Student Services Team in 2021. Shane is a very experienced educator and we are really pleased he will be working with us next year.
Hi Aveley Secondary College, my name is Shane Sharma and I will be joining the team as a Health and Physical Education teacher as well as the Year Coordinator of Year 10. I have been working in education for over 7 years and absolutely love it! My goal as an educator is to make sure that students are ready for the future world, where they are equipped with the skills, knowledge and ability to tackle any situation life throws at them and that they are prepared for the next step after high school wherever that pathway may lead them.
I look forward to meeting you all and being a part of the Aveley Community come 2021.
Gingerbread biscuits
The Year 9 Food Technology students spent their last practical lessons creating some delicious holiday themed gingerbread biscuits. They worked hard over two lessons to prepare and present their gingerbread, extending their technique by using the piping method they learnt in a recent ‘chocolatiering course’. The Technology department were proud to see the creative flair our students have and are excited to see what Gingerbread House designs they can come up with in Year 10 Food Science.
Bunnings Donation
Bunnings Warehouse has generously donated 30 DIY woodwork tool boxes for our students to build. Their strong commitment to community involvement has resulted in some wonderful educational opportunities for our Education Support students who enjoyed working with hammers and nails to build the boxes. We wish to thank Bunnings Warehouse for their generous donation and a special thank you to our local and friendly Bunnings Education officer Tez Harmer.
Happy Holidays
We would like to wish all of our students, staff and the community a happy and safe holiday season. The office will reopen 25 January and students return Monday 1 February 2021.
The last newsletter of the year will be emailed home to subscribers soon. We hope you enjoy reading about all of the wonderful things our staff and students have done this term. To subscribe to our newsletter select ‘Sign Up to Our Newsletter’ from the ‘More’ drop down box above and fill in your details.

Hi Everyone, I am very excited and eager to be joining Aveley Secondary College in the Health and Physical Education Department in 2021. I am a determined and passionate professional who loves to help students achieve the best they possibly can.
As well as teaching, I have my Certificate III and IV in Fitness which means I’m a qualified personal trainer and have a wide range of knowledge towards weight/resistance training, cardio/fitness training and high quality nutrition/eating.
I play Aussie Rules Football in the WAFL for Swan Districts Football Club and am part of the leadership group. As well as football my training consists of gym work, swimming, boxing, bike riding, and F45 functional training. In addition, I love sports like Basketball, Cricket, and Tennis and have played each of these sports at a competitive level at some stage during my life.
I am excited to meet the students, parents and Aveley community in 2021!
IDPwD Book Reading
After their wonderful musical performance for International Day of People with Disability our Education Support students were treated to a book reading at Ellenbrook Library.
Jessica Shaw, MLA, read Naomi’s World a book written by Naomi Lake, an ambassador for Down Syndrome WA. Naomi describes the writing process as “the ideas start in my brain but I write from the heart, then it travels down my arm and flows out through my hand.”
Zac’s Game Plan, written by Ewan Fowles, an author with cerebral palsy, was also read to our students who were lucky enough to meet him afterwards. Ewan is passionate about bridging the social gap between those with disabilities and those without.
Special thanks to Carers WA for the donation of two copies of the books for our Library and Education Support Hub. Thank you also to Mission Australia and the City of Swan.
New Staff: Mitch Hattie
Introducing Mitch Hattie who is another one of our amazing new additions, joining our Math’s team next year. Mitch comes with a unique background including industry experience.
My name is Mitch Hattie and I’ll be joining the Maths Department in 2021. I completed a PhD in Chemistry at UWA and have worked in the pharmaceutical industry, followed by a stint in business. I went on to study a few short courses in Mandarin at NTNU in Taiwan, and learning Mandarin has become one of my most favourite hobbies. I’m a lifelong learner and look forward to dispersing my curiosity and passion throughout Aveley Secondary College and the wider community.
