Teaching and Learning

Aveley Secondary College will develop the whole child: academically, socially and emotionally through a highly engaging curriculum, strong links to the community and global citizenship. We are committed to providing an ethic of excellence, developing critical thinking, inquiry, creativity and interpersonal skills within our students to pave the road for their successes in the 21st century. The College has a strong focus on the implementation of Science, Technologies, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics within the classroom and in our extracurricular offerings.

With a BYOD program and enthusiastic and motivated staff, we have developed engaging, hands on programs to explore students’ critical process of creativity and innovation. Aveley Secondary College is dedicated to supporting the literacy of our students by providing and promoting a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment with an extensive range of print and electronic resources and technologies.

EXPLICIT DIRECT INSTRUCTION Expand

At Aveley Secondary College we teach using our signature pedagogy of Explicit Direct Instruction, based on the model created by John Hollingsworth and Silvia Ybarra from DataWORKS Educational Research. Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) is a strategic collection of research-based instructional practices pioneered by pedagogues and cognitive researchers, such as Hattie, Rosenshine, Marzano, Sousa, Hunter, Goldenberg, and many more. EDI is used to systematically and explicitly teach new concepts by breaking down the content, modelling skills and guiding students to mastery. These strategies help teachers deliver well-crafted lessons that explicitly teach grade-level content to all students the first time a concept is taught.

EDI follows a specific lesson design consisting of:

  • Daily Review
  • Learning objective
  • Activate prior knowledge
  • Concept development
  • Skill development
  • Lesson relevance
  • Guided practice
  • Lesson closure
  • Independent practice

Visible features of a lesson include students using individual whiteboards, pair-sharing, framed questions and individual accountability in order for teachers to check for understanding and ensure the class have mastered concepts. John Hattie’s work on Visible Learning states that effective instruction in the classroom has one of the most direct impacts on student learning and outcomes. Through the use of EDI and ongoing modelling, coaching, observation and feedback we maximise opportunities for student achievement.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION (DI) Expand

Literacy and Numeracy Supplementary Programs

Students identified as requiring additional education support in literacy and numeracy are enrolled in a Direct Instruction (DI) program for Mathematics and/or English. The programs focus on the skills and knowledge expected to occur in early acquisition. The aim is to fill gaps in learning and to cover work that was not fully learned during the initial teaching and learning phase.

The DI program is organized so that skills are introduced gradually, giving students a chance to learn those skills and apply them before being required to learn another new set of skills. It is delivered in small groups with the aim is that students will achieve enough progress to move into mainstream classes. Students who require further intervention will receive a place in the before school Literacy and Numeracy program to compliment class work and provide further exposure to the essential skills required.

Direct Instruction involves:

  • A carefully sequenced curriculum of knowledge and skills
  • The explicit teaching of that curriculum
  • Mastery learning, where children progress to the next level only when they have mastered the level they are at

The Direct Instruction Programs currently being delivered at ASC are:

  • Connecting Math Concepts
  • Corrective Reading Decoding
  • Essentials for Writing
  • Spelling Morphographs

CURRICULUM Expand

At Aveley Secondary College we place great importance on ensuring that our students are provided access to quality teaching and learning. Our curriculum is created to align with the Western Australian Curriculum setting out the core knowledge, understanding, skills and general capabilities for all students. It makes clear what our students should learn as they progress through schooling and is the foundation and guide for high-quality teaching to meet the needs of all students.

The curriculum in Years 7-10 focuses on the acquisition and practising of skills, knowledge and understandings. Students will be provided with challenging learning opportunities and an increasing level of complexity and specialisation as they progress through secondary schooling

REPORTING ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Expand

Monitoring of student progress is carried out continuously during the school year. All students sit common assessments in each learning area to establish comparability between classes and students. Parents can contact class teachers to ascertain progress, levels of achievement and seek recommendations for improvement. The Connect portal also provides much information about lesson content, assessments, student progress and attendance.

ASC reports on student achievement 3 times per year

  • Term 1: Progress Report
  • Term 2: Semester 1 Report
  • Term 4: Semester 2 Report

The Semester 1 reports outline the student’s progress towards achievement in the year long courses within each of the Learning Areas. The Semester 2 report indicates their achievement at the completion of the course.

NAPLAN Expand

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment of all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students are expected to participate in the testing. They will be assessed in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and numeracy. All schools across Australia must complete the tests on the same days. The content of each test is informed by the Australian Curriculum (English and Mathematics).

Language Conventions: students identify and correct spelling errors and answer questions on aspects of grammar and punctuation.

Writing: students write a text in response to a given stimulus. They are assessed on the quality and organisation of ideas, structuring of sentences and use of correct spelling and punctuation.

Reading: students read a number of short texts and answer questions to show understanding of the texts.

Numeracy: students solve problems across Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.

The NAPLAN tests are designed to complement the regular assessments made by teachers throughout the year. Please see the links below for more information
