Aveley Secondary College launched the Specialist Australian Football League Program in 2026 for Year 7 students and, building on the success of its inaugural year, the College looks forward to offering the program to Year 7 students again in 2027. An exciting opportunity for male and female students passionate about AFL. Our specialist AFL program is designed to develop students both as athletes and individuals. It places a strong emphasis on developing skills, physical performance, strength and fitness to enhance gameplay and strategic ability, enabling students to perform at their best.
The Aveley SC Specialist AFL Program provides the environment, coaching, and support to help students along their AFL pathway. Supporting them in representing the College and their Club, accessing WAFL Development Programs and State level selection. Students are supported within a school environment that nurtures both their academic and personal well-being, enabling them to achieve a quality education while pursuing their AFL sporting ambitions.
Key Focus
- Skill development, tactics, and gameplay
- Football-specific health and performance education
- Strength and conditioning programs aligned with AFL/WAFL standards, including an individual student program
- Fitness assessment twice a year with formal feedback provided
- Specialist sprint coaching
- Individual goal setting and progress reviews
- Developing confidence, discipline, leadership, teamwork and self-management.
Students will also have access to a weekly 35-minute after-school session focused on recovery and rehabilitation during the AFL season.
Program Coordinator and Coach, Mr Jesse Turner
Mr Jesse Turner is an experienced Health and Physical Education teacher and elite-level AFL player whose passion for the game inspires his work in developing students’ AFL skills, performance, and understanding of the game. Mr Turners outstanding AFL career includes the following achievements:
- Currently serves as the WAFL League Captain for Swan Districts Football Club
- Four-time representative for Western Australia in the State of Origin competition, including a captaincy role
- Seven-time selection in the WAFL Team of the Year
- Multiple-time winner of Swan Districts Football Club’s ‘Best and Fairest’ award- Swan Medal

"At the heart of my coaching philosophy are the values of hard work, commitment, resilience, and enjoying the journey- not just focusing on the outcome. I believe these principles are just as important in life as they are in football, and I strive to instil them in every student within the program. I am excited to be running the Specialist AFL Program at Aveley SC and to develop well-rounded athletes by building strong skills, game awareness, fitness, and leadership- preparing students to achieve success both on and off the field."
Program Highlights
- Use of specialist College facilities, including Sports Hall, weights room, hydrotherapy pool, cardio and boxing equipment
- Access to the specialist AFL Oval- Ellenbrook District Open Space
- Opportunities to compete in SSWA competitions, interschool matches, pre-season games and day carnivals
- Support with preparation for District and State trials
- Stadium tours and elite facility visits (e.g. Optus Stadium, Fremantle Dockers, West Coast Eagles, WAFL clubs)
- Guest speakers, incursions and excursions
- Elite player pathway support through local club partnerships and links to Swan Districts and East Perth Football Club and the WA Football Commission.
